Responsive Teaching in the Context of Theory-Building Activities

Abstract:

Theory-building activities are a powerful context for eliciting and building on student ideas. We present an approach to structuring responsive teaching in the context of theory-building activities, which is designed to help students articulate, evaluate, and refine their ideas through generating, testing, and revising theoretical knowledge artifacts, such as models and explanations. Our approach focuses on the design of theory-building activities and teacher moves to support student knowledge construction, in alignment with constructivist ideals.
