Expanding STEM through Exploration of a STEM Identity Ecosystem

Abstract:
STEM is a social construct that has privileged the academic experiences of wealthy White males as the standard. To expand the definition of STEM, I argue for use of an analytic lens of identity focused on the perspectives of historically marginalized populations. Situated in Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems theory, Social Identity theory, and Projective Reflection theory, I propose a STEM Identity Ecosystem framework representing interpersonal and intrapersonal interactions influencing an individual’s STEM identity
