Abstract:
The transportation networks of today are evolving to allow electric vehicles (EVs) to actively charge while in-motion utilizing a system known as dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT). As EVs become more readily available in sales markets, there is a growing concern that the additional electric load demand would cause instability within electrical power distribution systems. This paper proposes a priority load control (PLC) method to mitigate load demands. The proposed approach analyzes power demands, state-of-charge (SOC) of EVs, and voltage and phase angle fluctuations that are generated from a 10-mile DWPT roadway EV charging infrastructure, which is simulated using an IEEE 33-bus power distribution system. Test results demonstrate that a DWPT roadway utilizing 100% PLC would experience significant instability that could lead to undervoltages occurring within distribution grids. However, upon following the proposed approach, a 60% PLC was able to reduce peak load demands by approximately 46.2%, which allowed the distribution grids to have more stability margin.
