January ’25 Utah Pilot Updates
1MW Charger
We’ve made major progress in deploying the world’s first 1 Megawatt wireless charger for electric vehicles. Last summer in the Netherlands, a port deployed a 1 Megawatt charger, however it was a plug-in version for trucks and boats. This is the first technology that can deliver that much power wirelessly. This charging pad will demonstrate 30 minute fast charging of a Class 8 (Kenworth) battery electric semi called FALCON. The FALCON will deliver 1/3 of the parcels from the UPS Regional Facility located in the Utah Inland Port of Salt Lake City to Cache Valley, Utah on “Rocky Mountain Doubles” (Two trailers: one 45- to 48-foot semitrailer, and a shorter 28-foot semitrailer). The two routes (one from the port to Logan, the other from the port to Provo/Orem) will demonstrate e-semi capabilities hauling heavy loads through harsh climates and elevation changes.
We completed installation of the charger at the Electric Vehicle & Roadway (EVR) research facility in Logan. We’ve begun construction of the charger at the inland port, and we expect to launch the pilot soon.
CFX EVR Installation
We broke ground in April for the SR 516 Lake/Orange Expressway pilot in Florida. This project is a partnership with the Central Florida Expressway Authority and ENRX, to build a new road with wireless charging capabilities.
Before embedding it in SR516, we’re installing and testing the technology at the EVR. As this is the first time it will be embedded in a roadway, we’ll be able to gather data, leverage insights, and suggest improvements before it’s added to the Florida Expressway.
