Presentation Title or Topic | Creative Engineering Design & Environmental Justice StoryMaps |
Presenters | Jennifer Taylor |
Abstract: | This presentation builds on the ArcGIS Environmental Justice StoryMaps collection, which is a core resource of the “Creative Engineering Design” high school course piloted by the NSF ASPIRE Engineering Research Center. ASPIRE’s goal is widespread and accessible EV roadway electrification to solve transportation-related air quality and climate change concerns. This project-based course integrates ArcGIS StoryMaps as a content learning resource and extends the use of StoryMaps for students to explore and demonstrate their understanding of the connections between the environment and engineering. This project extends the use of StoryMaps from K-12 educational resources focused on student learning of content to student-created StoryMaps used as formative or summative assessments. This development progresses students from being consumers of geospatial data to creators of geospatial information and enables students to innovatively demonstrate their learning in real-world applications. Authentic engagement is essential to effective student learning. Using place- and project-based learning offers students opportunities to build their knowledge of STEM concepts and apply them in a real-world application. ArcGIS StoryMaps are a user-friendly tool that both K-12 educators and students can use to construct and demonstrate meaningful STEM learning from a geospatial perspective. |
