Presentation Title or Topic Creative Engineering Design: Engaging Students in Equity- and Sustainability-Focused Engineering
Presenters Jennifer Taylor
Abstract:

The Creative Engineering Design (CED) course is a project-based introductory high school engineering course that explores engineering concepts and real-world engineering applications through the lens of equitable, sustainable electric vehicle (EV) technology. CED builds students’ understanding of the connections between engineering and environmental justice through widespread EV adoption. CED is a classroom-tested, ready-to-teach, hands-on engineering curriculum that highlights concepts of the NSF-funded ASPIRE (Advancing Sustainability through Powered Infrastructure for Roadway Electrification) Engineering Research Center (ERC), which aims to make equitable and sustainable widespread electric vehicle-based transportation a reality. The CED course guides teachers to better prepare students for careers of the future related to the advancement of EV technology. Through the CED workshop, teachers will receive a materials starter kit, access to free CED resources, and be actively engaged in a teacher-as-student perspective to gain experience in embedding the engineering design process, developing engineering skills (CAD, circuits & motors), exploring transportation-related environmental justice themes (air quality, public health, climate impacts), raising awareness of career opportunities in engineering, and engaging students in independent and team engineering design projects.
