Biography
Tom Allen is a Senior Lecturer within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and a member of the Centre for Advanced Composite Materials at the University of Auckland. He gained his PhD at the centre in 2013. Between 2013 and 2016 he worked as a research fellow within the Centre of Advanced Composite Materials, before joining the design team at Pure Design and Engineering, undertaking structural analysis on high-performance racing yachts. In 2019 he joined the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Auckland as an academic staff member. The primarily focus of his research is in the manufacture and structural performance of structures manufactured from composite materials. In 2017, he partnered with the University of Auckland’s Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering Department and diversified his research into thermal and mechanical performance of wireless charging systems. He’s a key researcher in the Mechanical Integration and Protection team within the IPT Highways programme at the University of Auckland. He has produced more than 50 publications to date.
